Main Purpose |
Verbal interpretation, in person or remotely, during daily medical activities (consultations, interviews, meetings, etc.) and written translations, from the mission language to local language(s) or vice versa, in order to ensure accurate, respectful, fluent and confidential communication between medical staff and local population. |
Accountabilities |
• Provide face to face interpreting, as well as during telephone and radio call or other telecom devices, when necessary.
• Inform medical staff about any local customs, traditions, important cultural nuances that will help to understand better the context during a meeting, medical consultation or interview with local people or detainees. • Adapt communication to any circumstances, using appropriate language registry as well as diplomatic and courtesy manners. • Translate MSF internal/external documents into local language as requested. • Keep record of all translated document • Look after all equipment provided, i.e. dictionaries or other books that belong to MSF. • Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy of all translation is maintained. • Participate in any other related activities as requested by the line manager |
MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities |
· Perform medical interpretation (French to Arabic or Arabic to English) for the medial team in OPD in Misrata, the Mobile Clinics in Detention Centers and disembarkation point and other locations as needed.
· Respect the legal and moral obligation (privacy, confidentiality and consent) while working with the medical team. · Assisting the medical team with the patient’s health education sessions and health promotion if required. · Assist the team to prepare and organize the consultation room. · During waiting time help the medical team with minor tasks like organizing the patient files or distributing patient number cards. · Relay concerns or questions of the patient to the medical team. · Ensure neutrality and accuracy when translating. · Keep respectful, calm and emphatic tone/attitude towards the patients also in stressful situations. · Support good collaboration with other actors, authorities, military factions and MSF staff participating in the communication. · Attend medical meetings and participate in the relevant discussions. |
Requirements | |
Education | Essential secondary education, university degree desirable, health knowledge advisable. |
Experience | Not essential but highly desirable if previous experience working in health care facility or with medical organization. |
Languages | Essential: English and Arabic.
Highly desirable: French Asset: Hausa, Somali, Tigrinya |
